The Ames Laboratory is a Department of Energy (DOE) funded national laboratory operated through contractual agreement with Iowa State University.
This postdoctoral scholar position conceives, designs and conducts studies of topological and superconducting materials using magneto-terahertz (THz) and Raman spectroscopy tools. The position collaborates with the supervisor and other PIs in the Division of Materials Sciences and Engineering within the Ames Laboratory; invents, performs and supervises experiments; interprets the results; presents and defends research at professional meetings; drafts manuscripts for publication with collaborating co-authors; guides experimenters in the conduct of experimentation and the interpretation of results; and help write research proposals for future funding of research projects. The duties of this position also include initiating and performing research at DOE User facilities. The candidate is also responsible for the maintenance and supervision of the daily operation of the state-of-the-art experimental facility including magneto-Raman and terahertz spectroscopy, THz pump-probe spectroscopy. The prior track record and experiences with applying these techniques to topological materials and/or superconductors and strong expertise in cryogenic magneto-optical spectroscopy are required. The ability to interface with a diverse team of administrative staff and spectroscopy/microscopy professionals, as well as condensed matter experimentalists and theoreticians are also needed for success in this position. *This position is only for a 2-month appointment due to funding.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. is required before start date.
Degree must be in physical science or related field at a fully accredited research university. Experience must include research in the area of magneto-Raman, terahertz spectroscopy of topological materials and/or superconductors. Strong expertise in cryogenic magneto-Raman and ultrafast spectroscopy is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
2 years of experience at the PhD level.
Prior experience and track record using magneto-Raman and THz pump-probe spectroscopy and magneto-terahertz spectroscopy.
Prior experience in National user facilities on ultrafast science.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with cutting-edge ultrafast laser spectroscopy techniques and applying lasers to study topological, electronic and magnetic states of matter.
Experience with building, maintaining, and troubleshooting various laser systems in a broad-spectrum range: UV-VIS-IR-THz.
Experience with high vacuum, high magnetic field, and low temperature cryogenic systems.
Demonstrated publication record, including publications in high impact journals
