The Clinical Research program at the Comprehensive Cancer Center seeks a qualified Research Laboratory Technician (RLT) Intermediate for its specimen processing and distribution lab located within the Cancer Center. This position will play an essential role in supporting over 100 cancer research studies a year in a fast paced, high volume environment.
Primary responsibilities include:
Assisting the Cancer Center investigators and clinical research support staff with Specimen Core research lab functions, which include, processing, shipping and handling of research specimens. Understanding of the basic principles of specimen processing. Demonstrates an understanding of proper lab equipment usage. Processes incoming samples by ensuring correct labeling, computer log in, centrifugation, aliquoting, and storage. Process patient’s specimens according to each protocol’s specific requirements within specified turnaround times without sacrificing quality. Gains knowledge on how the role of the study coordinators fit into the lab process. Demonstrates flexibility in task completion to meet the needs of multiple cancer treatment specialties. Maintains integrity in everyday work; identifies lab quality issues and communicates with RLS-Senior for assistance with resolution. Understands UMHS / CC Research Program / CC Clinical Team infrastructure. Attends and participates in training classes to navigate and utilize information in MiChart, CTMS and RETA. Gains understanding of GLPs. E-mail (preferred) or call receiving sites as required per protocol. Retain/file appropriate documentation of notification and specified turnaround times without sacrificing quality. Exposure to and gaining proficiency in how to follow clinical research protocol guidelines for specimen collection, tracking, processing, packing, storage and shipping. Accurately records required study specific specimen processing information in CTMS. Records sample disposition (freezer location or shipping tracker information) with complete and accurate documentation on requisition forms, shipping documents and CTMS. Performs and records routine instrument maintenance procedures; (i.e. temp logs, scraping freezers, reviewing nitrogen supply, etc.
