INSTITUTE OF HUMAN VIROLOGY
UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND
A postdoctoral position is available immediately for a highly motivated candidate at the University of Maryland, School of Medicine, in Baltimore, Maryland. The successful candidate will join an ongoing research study focused on immunity at the fetal maternal interphase and impact of maternal HIV or malaria infections on immune responses in infants. This project will entail phenotypic and functional analyses of neonatal and infant lymphocytes using a high-dimensional flow cytometry approach. Deep understanding of multi-parameter flow cytometry, with ability to design, troubleshoot and optimize panels with at least 8-9 fluorochromes is essential. Previous experience with a spectral flow-cytometry platform and knowledge of FlowSOM or other unsupervised cluster analysis pipelines is highly desirable. The successful applicant will have access to state-of-the-art spectral flow cytometry and mass cytometry analyzers under the supervision of expert faculty. The project is a highly collaborative effort providing the opportunity to interact with world-renowned human immunologists at the Center for Vaccine Development. Duties will include ex vivo stimulation of cord and peripheral blood mononuclear cells, primary cell cultures, flow cytometry-based functional assays (including intracellular cytokine production and granule mobilization), extraction of nucleic acids, RT-PCR, and possibly bulk or single cell-RNA seq.
In the Fall of 2021, UMB will require all faculty, staff, and students to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Exemptions for medical or religious reasons will be processed through Human Resources
The ideal candidate should have a Ph.D., or M.D., Ph.D., with prior experience operating flow cytometry analyzers. Experience in molecular biology is desirable but not required. Interested parties should submit a cover letter, CV and complete contact information for 3 references to Cristiana Cairo, Ph.D, Assistant Professor, Division of Basic Science and Vaccine Research, Institute of Human Virology, University of Maryland School of Medicine.
