Compensation and Appointment

Position: Assistant Professor, Educator Scholar

Compensation: $70,000+ based on education and experience

Benefits: Includes single or family health care coverage (premiums paid for by the university), basic life insurance, EAP, retirement plan, and tuition waiver. Optional benefits available: supplemental life, dental, vision, flexible spending account, supplemental retirement plans.

This is a twelve-month, full-time, tenure track appointment with University of North Dakota (UND) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), Department of Population Health in the Public Health Program.


Job Summary and Responsibilities

The Department of Population Health’s Public Health Program has an opening for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The Assistant Professor will work in close collaboration with the Public Health Program Director, Assistant Director, and other faculty and staff members to advance the Public Health Program.

Roles and percentage of time include:

  • 45% teaching
  • 45% research
  • 10% service


Teaching (45%):

Indigenous Health PhD courses are taught in synchronous/distance formats. Blackboard is the teaching platform. Synchronous courses use Zoom and may use Yuja and VoiceThread technologies as well. The Assistant Professor will serve as the Primary Instructor for the following Indigenous Health PhD courses:

  • PH 731: Applied Biostatistics
  • PH 762: Quantitative Research Methods
  • PH 763: Qualitative Research Methods
  • PH 764: Mixed Methods Research

The Assistant Professor will also mentor MPH and PhD students and serve as an academic advisor.

Research (45%):

  • Collaborate with public health faculty on developing externally funded projects based on professional public health expertise.
  • Work with graduate students and create research assistantship opportunities.
  • Comply with promotion and tenure guidelines for research and scholarly activity as a Teaching Assistant Professor in the Department of Population Health.

Service (10%):

  • Service includes contribution to the institution/school/department (e.g. committees), to the profession (e.g. professional organizations), and to the community (e.g. boards, etc.).
  • Service expectations are commensurate with percent FTE and consistent with promotion guidelines.

It is expected that this position will generate 45-50% of salary from external sources for research and creative activity by the end of the first year.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Terminal degree in a public health discipline, medicine, psychology, health systems, health administration, or related field (ABD considered).
  • CV must demonstrate a track record of teaching graduate courses or demonstrates potential to successfully teach Public Health and Indigenous Health courses.
  • One-year experience and proficiency in using distance technologies for communications (webinars, online modules, or televideo, etc.).
  • CV must demonstrate track record of research grant writing or demonstrates potential to successfully apply for funding.
  • Successful criminal history record check.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience teaching at the graduate level.
  • MPH degree in addition to terminal degree.
  • Expertise in UND MPH specializations, including Health Management & Policy, Research & Analytics, and/or Indigenous Health.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience working with tribal, rural, diverse, or other underserved populations.
