Description of Work

The Post-Doctoral Research Associate is expected to support Dr. Kaiser in his publication and research grant efforts as well as in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students. The incumbent will specifically support Dr. Kaiser’s research activities about i) deep soil carbon dynamics in grassland and agricultural soils, ii) biochar properties and potential benefits for agricultural soil of Rwanda, iii) benefits from soil biochar application within the climate action plan of the city of Lincoln, NE, and iv) biochar surface functionalization with iron to retain soil water and nutrients. The group mainly focuses on clarifying effects of soil parent material as well as land use type and soil management on organic matter characteristics and carbon dynamics in topsoils and subsoils. For this, samples from laboratory and field experiments as well as from study sites characterized by different types of soil and vegetation cover will be analyzed by fractionation methods as well as by spectroscopic, microscopic and isotopic techniques. One of the long-term goals is the development of sustainable management options that enhance and maintain soil carbon storage while ensuring resource efficient crop production.

In addition to the above-described duties, the individual will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and or university level.

Minimum Required Qualifications

• PhD required in soil science, soil chemistry, biogeochemistry, organic geochemistry, or a related field.
• Record of publication in peer-reviewed international journals.
• Research experiences in soil organic carbon dynamics.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with i) soil organic matter fractionation, ii) soil micro- and mesocosm experiments statistical evaluation of soil data, and iii) biochar experiments
Knowledge about i) statistical evaluation of soil data, ii) analytical techniques such as SEM, XPS, XRF, and FTIR, and iii) measurement of carbon and nitrogen isotopes.
