Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is searching for a Postdoctoral Investigator to join the Geology & Geophysics Department. This is a regular full-time, exempt position, eligible for full benefits. The appointment is for a two-year period.

The Postdoctoral Investigator will be working on a project that has the broad objectives of seismically imaging an intact segment of oceanic-arc crust, in order to better understand crustal production in oceanic arcs -- a system of processes that are key to the habitability of planets but that are, nevertheless, poorly understood.

The institution has a top-rated postdoctoral program ( www.whoi.edu/postdoctoral/ ) that supports a dynamic postdoctoral community with formal mentoring and career guidance programs. While the primary focus of the work will be in research, the Postdoctoral Investigator will have the opportunity to participate in educational and outreach activities associated with the project.

Online applications should be submitted with a cover letter, a full curriculum vitae, and contact information for three references (to be uploaded as a separate cover letter). Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until April 1, 2021. A starting date of September 1, 2021 is desired. Informal inquiries may be made by email to Dr. Dan Lizarralde (dlizarralde@whoi.edu).

Essential Functions

This position has technical and intellectual requirements. The technical work involves traveltime-based tomographic inversion to delineate seismic velocity structure, multi-channel seismic imaging, and geochemical phase-equilibrium modeling to infer elemental composition and process from the seismic results. The intellectual requirements are that the analytical products be abstracted into new knowledge, which is then introduced to the wider community through the publication of a compelling scientific paper. Also of importance, is that the scientific objectives of this work align with the interests of the Postdoctoral Investigator, so that the work is both intellectually interesting to them while also furthering their long-term career interests as a scientist.

Education & Experience
  • PhD in Geophysics with specialty in seismology is required
  • Demonstrated expertise in multi-channel and wide-angle seismic data analysis, including tomographic inversion is required
  • Demonstrated scientific publication record with papers published in one or more journals is required
  • Programming experience in Fortran, Python, Matlab, Unix Shell Scripting and parallelization is required

Physical Requirements

Physical duties for this position may include but are not excluded to: routinely uses standard office equipment such as a computer and phone, uses hands for basic grasping and fine manipulation, frequently communicates and exchanges information with others in person and in virtual environments, both occasional sedentary and moving, has occasional exposure to electrical/mechanical and power equipment hazards. Should you need to discuss any accommodations to perform the essential functions of the job, please email eeo@whoi.edu.
