Essential Job Duties

The IEP-GTI Foundation Year SAT Test Preparation instructor is responsible for introducing participants in a foundation year program to the format and test-taking skills and strategies of the SAT. This program is administered jointly by NC State’s Intensive English Program (IEP) and Global Training Initiative (GTI). This is a temporary position with an approximate start date of August 1 and an end date of December 7, 2024.

The focus of this class will be on improving test scores in both sections of the new digital SAT (Reading/Writing and Math), with an emphasis on strategy and understanding. Students will take numerous practice tests and systematically review the results of each, while also sitting for all available official test sittings during the fall testing cycle.

Candidates may apply to only teach SAT Math, Reading/Writing, or both subjects.

Other Work/Responsibilities

1. Teaching 4 – 8 in-person class hours weekly (Location: Hillsborough St, Raleigh, NC)
2. Communicating with the program coordinator and IEP director
3. Providing extensive assistance and support for student questions regarding the SAT test
4. Maintaining and submitting attendance reports on a weekly basis
5. Participating in staff meetings, as requested.

Close cooperation and occasional meetings with supervisor regarding instruction and student progress and well-being will be required. Option open to participate in program activities both inside and outside the classroom (excursions, special classes, and meals). This is unpaid time.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree in any field plus 3+ years’ experience (or the equivalent) teaching SAT prep to intermediate to advanced-level students at the secondary or post-secondary level.

Department Required Skills

  • Minimum personal SAT score of 650 or above in area of expertise (Math or Reading/Writing), 1350 total.
  • Familiarity with format, strategies and teaching methodologies used in a SAT preparation course.
  • Experience working with advanced level students in a multicultural student population.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Familiarity with current trends in SAT prep and college applications.
  • Excellent spoken and written English, experience with ESL students a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of Middle Eastern culture and/or experience teaching international students preferred.
